A visit to a Historical Place- English Essay.

Historical Place Essay.

Historic monuments are our national heritage.

Introduction:

History teaches us about the culture, traditions, customs etc., of our ancient civilisation. It is also a part of education as remarked by Francis Bacon, “Travel in younger sort is a part of education, in the elder a part of experience.” Our History teacher believes in practical teaching. So, this year in the month of October he took some students to Agra. Being a student of History, I got an opportunity to visit this historical city.

Importance of Agra:

Agra is a famous city. It achieved great historical importance in India during the Mughal Period. The Mughal Emperors had kept it as their capital for a long time.

Buildings at Agra:

The Mughals built many beautiful buildings and monuments here in Agra. Some of them are very remarkable. The Taj Mahal, the Fort and the Fatehpur Sikri are places worth seeing.

We reached Agra at noon. We stayed in a good hotel. After taking some refreshment we started to see the Taj Mahal. We reached the Taj Mahal by taxis. There we purchased tickets and got in through the main entrance. As we entered, we found two vast lawns. There was a long passage between the lawns. We went through it and reached the white marble building.

Description of the Taj:

The Taj Mahal is situated on the right bank of the river Jamuna. The building was built by Shah Jehan in memory of his beloved queen, Mumtaz Mahal. Being matchless in beauty, the Taj Mahal is one of the beautiful work of art and architecture. The entire building is built of white marble. The Taj Mahal stands on a raised platform. There are four lofty minarets, one on each corner of the platform. At the centre of the platform stands a building with a huge dome.

On the gate of the main building, the verses from the holy Koran are engraved. The graves of both the King and the Queen are in the vault of the Taj Mahal. The building looks very beautiful in moonlight. It is like a love-poem etched in marble. It is like a dream come true and it tells us that true love never dies. The Taj left a good effect on my mind.

Our visit to other places like Radhaswami Temple etc. :

After seeing the Taj, we went to see the Red Fort next morning. It is built of red stone. So it is called the Red Fort. There are two halls-one is ‘Dewan-e-Aam’ and the other is ‘Dewan-e-Khas also There is a huge temple being made, by the followers of Radhaswami cult in Dayal Bagh This is a unique piece of architecture. There is one more unique aspect of this temple. All the main religions are represented in this temple. This is being made for more than forty years and is not completed yet. Sculptors of the highest repute are engaged in this work.

A visit to Fatehpur Sikri : ( Historical Place Essay )

At noon we visited Fatehpur Sikri. It is about 23 miles from Agra. It has a great story behind its construction. Emperor Akbar got it built in memory of his son’s birth. It is deserted now. There are also many other buildings. The Panch Mahal, the Buland Darwaza and the tombs of important persons are of main interest. The Buland Darwaza is a very lofty building. There are palaces of Birbal, Jodha Bai, Abul Fazal. The tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti is also there.

Conclusion:

We enjoyed the visit very much and returned home next day. I was not satisfied with this short visit. I wish to see it again. The memory of the Taj will always be fresh in our minds. It is indeed a beautiful building. Its beauty cannot be described in words.
